Every morning in Kampung Howei began exactly the same way.
The sun rose.
The rooster crowed.
The aunties swept their front yards.
The uncles discussed the weather.
And Hoho the bird sat on the same wooden fence, watching the same dusty road and thinking the same thought.
“Is this all there is?”
Hoho loved Kampung Howei. He loved the coconut trees, the friendly villagers, and especially the juicy jambu that grew everywhere. But every day felt like a copy of the one before.
Wake up.
Flap around.
Eat jambu.
Avoid the cat.
Take a nap.
Repeat.
One afternoon, Hoho stared down the long road leading out of the kampung.
Beyond the banana trees, beyond the little wooden houses, beyond the familiar bumps and potholes…
There had to be something more.
Then, suddenly, a mysterious golden coin rolled past him.
TING!
Hoho’s eyes widened.
It was a HoweiCoin.
Before he could even peck at it, another one appeared farther down the road.
Then another.
And another.
Hoho spread his wings.
“Maybe,” he said, “today won’t be so boring after all.”
He leapt from the fence and began to dash through Kampung Howei.
At first, it was easy.
Then the road started getting strange.
Colourful bumps suddenly popped up from above.
Others appeared from below.
“WHAT IS GOING ON?!” Hoho squawked.
He jumped.
He ducked.
He flapped.
He sprinted faster and faster.
Whenever he saw a juicy jambu, CHOMP! — more energy!
Whenever he spotted a golden HoweiCoin, TING! — more points!
But the obstacles kept coming.
One wrong move…
One tiny bump…
And it would be GAME OVER.
Hoho flew, jumped and dashed with all his might.
For the first time in his life, he wasn’t bored.
He wasn’t sitting on a fence.
He wasn’t waiting for something exciting to happen.
He was making it happen.
Soon, the familiar kampung road disappeared behind him.
Ahead was a world filled with challenges, surprises, juicy jambu and glittering HoweiCoins.
Hoho smiled.
Perhaps escaping a boring life didn’t mean leaving everything behind.
Perhaps all he had needed was the courage to take the first leap.
And so Hoho kept running.
SPACE. JUMP. SPRINT.
Because somewhere ahead…
there was another jambu.
Another HoweiCoin.
And probably another colourful bump trying to ruin his day.
